What is a Bong?

A bong (also known as a water pipe) is the simplest smoking tool for smoking tobacco or herbs. A bong is similar to a hookah, but it is smaller and more portable. It is usually constructed from several parts: bong bowl, downstem, ice pinch, splash guard, and bong percolator.

As the smoking world continues to gain popularity and evolve, we're seeing manufacturers rise to the challenge of producing some genuinely excellent bongs. What was once a simple affair is now a vast selection of some of the world's best water pipes and silicone bongs. We have seen some huge leaps forward in different material types, and now smokers around the world have much more choice in the type of water pipe that they use to enjoy their favorite dry herbs.

How Does A Bong Work?

How does a glass bong or silicone bong work? Your dry herb is placed in the bowl piece for bongs or cone pieces of the bong.

Step1: You fill the water pipe or bong to the correct level with water being careful not to overfill it. If you overfill it with water, water will end up either in your mouth or leaking from the bong.

Step 2: Once you have the bowl filled with your favorite herb and the bong correctly filled with water, you apply a heat source to the herb while slowly inhaling on the mouthpiece of the water pipe or bong.

Step 3: The smoke or vapor from the herb will travel from the bowl, down through the stem, and be filtered by the water. The water acts as a filter to cool the smoke down before it enters your mouth and lungs.

As you draw down on the mouthpiece, then smoke will bubble up through the water. Some water pipes and bongs have a small hole, which helps to control airflow. Once the dry herb in the bowl has been completely consumed, you release the air hole, which forces the smoke or vapor to enter your lungs quickly.

Guide to Buying a Bong

When it comes to choosing a water bong that suits you, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with the number of choices that you have. It’s essential that you remember that bongs basically perform similar functions, and many of the choices simply boil down to design aesthetics.

You may have browsed a lot of bongs from online or local head shops. As you can see, they come in different shapes, colors and sizes. Let’s go through a few things to look for when you’re purchasing a bong.

Herbs or wax?

If you want to purchase a bong for herbs, you should take a bong bowl. If you're looking for a glass water pipe for dabbing, then you will want a quartz banger or nail.

Budget.

How much is a bong? It depends on what kind of bongs that you want. Big bongs or small bongs? Glass or silicone? Simple or complex design? Custom bongs with unique designs will be more expensive than standard bongs.

Size.

The size mentioned here refers to the size of the Bong and the size of the Joint. Most bongs come in 10mm, 14mm, or 18mm joint sizes. No matter huge bongs or small bongs.

When it comes to talking about the size of bongs, you may consider where you use the bong. Small size bongs, especially the silicone bongs are perfect for on the go. Big bongs are suitable for home use.

Material.

Glass, silicone, or bamboo? Glass doesn’t contain any nasty chemicals, so you will get clean smoke when you smoke from a glass bong. That's why glass bong is the most widely used on the market. But the only problem of glass bongs is fragility. Silicone bongs are unbreakable, and they are also cheap.

Cleaning.

Every bong requires some regular cleaning! Resins and tars naturally accumulate inside your bong after you use it for a long time, which makes it look nasty. You can use bong cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to clean it. You can see the blog: how to clean a glass bong.

Accessories for Bongs

Ash Catcher

An ash catcher is a glass attachment with a percolator inside. It is specially designed for filtering the smoke to keep ash and resin from ending up in your bong. It will reduce the amount of tar oil that enters the main chamber of the water pipe.

Bong Bowls

A bong bowl(also known as a bong slide) is a must-have accessory to hold the tobacco or herbs for every bong. It is typically made from glass, silicone, or metal.

Glass Adapter

A glass adapter is an optional attachment to change the current joint size or gender of your bongs or dab rigs. If you get a new bowl or rig and discover it doesn't fit your water pipe or dab rig. You can use a glass adapter to turn it to any size you need.

Downstems

Downstem is a glass stem that connects the bong bowl to the water chamber. Some bongs come with fixed downstems. The benefit of the fixed downstem is that you never need to worry that it will drop down when you pull out the bowl. But the disadvantage is that it's a little harder to clean it. Most people prefer bongs equipped with removable downstems. Because removable downstems can be cleaned easily.

Bangers & Nails

A banger is a dab tool that holds the wax on the rig and is used to vaporize cannabis concentrate. It is a form of dab nails. Dab nails can vary in design but are generally circular and made of quartz, titanium, or ceramic. What's the most popular is the quartz banger.

Grinders

The herb grinder (or simply, a grinder) is a cylindrical device with several pieces that are used for grinding herbs. Most herb grinders are typically made of aluminum alloy material. A few grinders are made of zinc alloy or plastic which are lightweight.

Glass Bong Vs Silicone

While glass is one of the most popular material choices for water pipes and bongs, silicone is now coming in at a close second. Silicone bongs are durable, long-lasting, and easy to clean. Silicone also allows you to choose a bong color or style that suits your personality. With so many different choices available, we know that choosing just one bong is going to be extremely difficult!

Frequently Asked Questions

Mini Bongs: $20-$70 – The price of a mini bong is depending on the quality and materials. A simple mini bong can go as low as $20.

Big Bongs: $80-$300 – This price range is where you'll find a lot of big bongs with different types of percolators. For a custom bong or a well-known glass artist, you may have to pay more than $300.

Step 1: Fill your bong with water (Less than 1" above the tip of the downstem).
Step 2: Grind up your weed with the herb grinder.
Step 3: Put the weed in the bong bowl.
Step 4: Put your mouth on the mouthpiece.
Step 5: Light up the weed.
Step 6: Inhale slowly.
Step 7: Pull the bowl out of the stem and inhale the smoke in the chamber.

As you draw down on the mouthpiece, then smoke will bubble up through the water. The smoke or vapor from the herb will travel from the bowl, down through the stem, and will then be filtered by the water. The water acts as a filter to cool the smoke down before it enters your mouth and lungs.

Some bongs have a carb hole, which helps to control airflow. Once the dry herb in the bowl has been completely consumed, you release the air hole, which forces the smoke or vapor to quickly enter your lungs.

The answer may be a little different from different size bongs. But there is one thing that remains consistent, the bottom of the downstem should be submerged by the water. If not, the smoke will not filter through the water when you inhale it. If you put too much water, you will get struggles to pull your hit, and the water may splash into your mouth.

The best answer to how much water should be put in the bong is to submerge your downstem to the water by about 0.5".
