The chillum was first used in India in the 18th century but was later introduced in the US in the 1960s'. They were traditionally made of clay and featured a chillum stone that was inserted in the pipe to filter the smoke and help you avoid smoking any debris. Before they were commercially available, people used to go around looking for the right stone that fit the space and serve the same purpose.
It's a straight conical smoking pipe with a small hole that runs through it and some slits on the side to allow smoke to pass freely. It allows a straight shot from the bowl to the mouthpiece, which makes them great for beginners.
They are small enough to fit their case and any handbags, making them convenient when you are on the go. They were and are still associated with spirituality and meditation, so they are used by some groups of people like Rastafarians, for instance, in their sessions.
How to use a chillum?
Chillums are very discreet and cost-effective due to their small size and portability. It is the safest way to enjoy your favorite herb without any inconvenience. Chillums allow you to smoke in almost any place without drawing too much attention, so most people prefer them.
Prepare your herb
After getting the chillum of your choice (pick one that is easiest and most comfortable to handle), and you should then go ahead and prepare your preferred herb. It would be best if you packed it in snugly enough that it's tight but not too close so that it doesn't fall from the pipe and, at the same time, allow some air to pass through and help with combustion.
Tip: You should have a wet towel that you'll use to hold the pipe if you feel like it'll be too hot for you to hold it on its own.
How to hold the chillum?
The best way to hold your chillum pipe is to place it between your pinkie finger and your ring finger and make a fist, which will leave your other hand
free to light the chillum. Be sure to keep the heated end as far away from your face to avoid burning your eyelashes or hair. You should also make sure that the lighted endpoints are upwards to prevent you from dropping the lit herbs on the floor.
How to draw the smoke?
It would be best if you drew the smoke from your chillum slowly and gently, after making sure it's lit, for you to have the best smoking session. Make sure to allow decent amounts of air through your chillum pipe to let the herb burn evenly to get the best effects.
